The vault is a building structure whose function is to transfer load to the load-bearing walls. They consist of the heel, the top, the summit, the curves, the cheeks, the back and the forehead. Depending on the type, we recognize the vault, the cross and the rib. The vaults began to be used in the Sumerian realms, both in civil engineering constructions and in blooming construction projects such as palaces and sacral buildings. But the peak had its vault with the arrival of the Middle Ages, when large cathedrals began to be built. Since the mid-nineteenth century, a vault of steel has begun and in the twentieth century it has also been added to concrete.
